In a nail-biting Super Over during the Asia Cup 2025 clash between India and Sri Lanka at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, fans witnessed a dramatic twist involving Sri Lanka’s former captain Dasun Shanaka. The high-pressure encounter saw both teams battling for supremacy, and one unusual moment had everyone talking as Shanaka survived what looked like a double dismissal in a single delivery.
The drama unfolded on the fourth delivery of Sri Lanka’s Super Over. Arshdeep Singh bowled a full delivery angling away from Shanaka, who poked at it for a quick single but missed. As Shanaka started running, India’s wicketkeeper Sanju Samson collected the ball and hit the stumps while Shanaka was mid-pitch. At first glance, it seemed a clear run-out, but the on-field umpire ruled Shanaka out for caught-behind instead.
Shanaka immediately opted for a review using the Decision Review System (DRS), and the third umpire found that the ball had not made any contact with his bat. As a result, the caught-behind decision was overturned. Additionally, the run-out appeal became void because the ball was considered dead once the caught-behind dismissal had been signaled. This rare set of circumstances allowed Shanaka to survive the delivery unharmed. However, his reprieve was short-lived, as Arshdeep dismissed him on the very next ball, ending Sri Lanka’s Super Over at 2/2 in just five deliveries.

Chasing a modest target of three runs in the Super Over, India took just one ball to secure victory. The win kept India unbeaten in the Asia Cup Super 4 stage and strengthened their position as favorites heading into the highly anticipated final against Pakistan.
