The Women’s Caribbean Premier League (WCPL) 2025 witnessed a thrilling clash at the Providence Stadium as Barbados Royals Women registered a comprehensive seven-wicket victory over Trinbago Knight Riders Women in Match 6 of the tournament. Chamari Athapaththu‘s match-winning knock of 89 runs off 71 deliveries anchored the Royals’ chase, while Courtney Webb provided valuable support with an unbeaten half-century. Despite Jess Jonassen‘s heroic innings for Trinbago, the Royals proved too strong on the day.
After opting to bat first, Trinbago Knight Riders Women got off to a shaky start as they lost star batter Deandra Dottin for a duck in just the second delivery. Jannillea Glasgow followed soon after, leaving the side struggling at 2/2. However, Jonassen steadied the innings with a superb 71 off 52 balls, striking nine boundaries and a six. Her partnership with Zaida James (17 off 21) helped rebuild the innings, while Shikha Pandey‘s quick-fire 24 off 21 balls added some momentum in the middle overs. Contributions from Jahzara Claxton (15 off 10) and Shabika Gajnabi (7 off 5) pushed the total to a competitive 148/8 in 20 overs.
The Royals’ bowling unit kept chipping away at regular intervals. Chinelle Henry was the standout bowler with impressive figures of 3/25 from her four overs, while Shamilia Connell complemented her well by claiming 2/33. Aaliyah Alleyne chipped in with a wicket, while Shreyanka Patil bowled economically, conceding just 23 runs in her four overs despite going wicketless. Their disciplined effort restricted Trinbago from crossing the 150-run mark.

Chasing 149, the Royals suffered a couple of early setbacks as Kycia Knight (1) and young Djenaba Joseph (0) departed cheaply, leaving the team reeling at 2/2. However, skipper Athapaththu rose to the occasion and played a captain’s knock. Displaying her trademark aggression and composure, she struck 10 fours and three sixes en route to a match-defining 89 off 71 balls. Her innings not only stabilized the chase but also kept the required rate in check throughout.
Courtney Webb complemented Athapaththu perfectly, anchoring the other end with an unbeaten 50 off 42 deliveries. Their 147-run partnership ensured that the Royals never allowed Trinbago back into the contest. Athapaththu fell just before the finish line, but by then, the Royals were firmly in control. The winning runs were struck in the 20th over, as Barbados sealed the game with 149/3 in 19.1 overs.
For the Knight Riders, Pandey was the most successful bowler, picking up 2/19 in her 3.1 overs. Jonassen also chipped in with a wicket, but the rest of the bowling unit struggled to contain Athapaththu and Webb’s partnership. Despite Dottin’s economical spell of 0/18, the lack of breakthroughs hurt Trinbago’s chances of defending their total.
