The Providence Stadium witnessed a high-octane contest as Guyana Amazon Warriors (GAW) held their nerve to beat Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR) by three wickets in Match 23 of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025.
Asked to bat first, TKR were in early trouble at 66/4, but veteran Kieron Pollard turned back the clock with a blistering knock. The all-rounder smashed 54 off just 18 balls, blasting five fours and five sixes to propel Trinbago to a competitive 167/5 in 20 overs.
Earlier, Darren Bravo (33 off 35) and Keacy Carty (29 off 34) played rebuilding hands, while Guyana’s bowlers kept things largely in check. Moeen Ali (1/11) was the pick of the attack, while Dwaine Pretorius, Romario Shepherd, and Imran Tahir grabbed one wicket each.
Chasing 168, Guyana lost Moeen Ali cheaply but recovered through Shai Hope (53 off 46) and Shimron Hetmyer (49 off 30), who stitched together a vital partnership. Hope played a steady anchor’s role, striking three fours and as many sixes, while Hetmyer unleashed his power game with two fours and 4 sixes.
Though both missed out on fifties, their efforts set the tone for the chase.
The game was still in the balance when Guyana slipped to 141/5, but Pretorius (26 not out off 14, 3 sixes) kept calm under pressure. His calculated hitting in the death overs ensured Guyana crossed the finish line with one ball to spare, ending at 168/7 in 19.5 overs.
Romario Shepherd (9 off 6) and Quentin Sampson (7 off 4) also chipped in with handy cameos to support the chase.
TKR’s bowlers fought hard to defend the total, led by the ever-reliable Sunil Narine (2/12 in 4 overs), who applied the brakes in the middle overs. Akeal Hosein (2/35) and Usman Tariq (1/36) also picked up crucial wickets, while Nathan Edwards and Andre Russell added one apiece.
However, the brilliance of Pretorius in the closing stages nullified their efforts.
