KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal started off quite well. The duo negated the new ball threat with relative ease. The first hour of the day belonged to India, as they moved onto 52/0 at the end of 15 overs. By the end of the 24th over, they had already got to 91 without the loss of any wickets. But, soon after Rahul (42 off 78) slashed at a wide one which led to his downfall.
Early Lunch was called after debutant Sai Sudharsan tried to flick a delivery sliding down leg into Jamie Smith's hands. The left-hander was dismissed for a four-ball duck. Jaiswal got to his first Test half-century in his first game in England. A few overs later, Shubman Gill brought up his maiden half-century as Test skipper. Jaiswal brought up his hundred on the final ball of a 13-run over by Brydon Carse.
By the time Tea was called, India had got to 215/2 after 51 overs. Ben Stokes struck in his first over of the third session to send Jaiswal (101 off 159) back with a ripper. There was no boundary scored after that over from Stokes till the next eight overs. The team 300 was brought up with a maximum by Rishabh Pant, who had already entered the 40s by then.
A blazing drive through the cover region brought up Gill's ton. India reached 331 by the end of 80 overs. Rishabh Pant registered a half-century in the same over in which the new ball was taken. Gill and Pant ended the day on 127* and 65*, respectively. They ended up scoring at a rate above four at the end of the day's play.
