ENG vs WI 2025: Shai Hope becomes second wicketkeeper-captain to get dismissed on 49 in T20Is

Shai Hope was dismissed on 49 off 38 during the second T20I of the ongoing 20-over series between England and West Indies at the County Ground in Bristol. Hope was the second wicket to fall for the visitors. Hope's knock comprised two fours and four sixes.

A beautifully bowled leg-spinner from Adil Rashid drew Hope forward. The drift enabled the ball to go past the outside edge. Hope was well outside the crease when Jos Buttler collected the ball and dislodged the bails off the ridge of the stumps.

With this, Hope became only the second wicketkeeper-captain in T20Is to get dismissed on 49 while coming in at No. 3 after Zimbabwe's Brendan Taylor in 2014 during a T20 World Cup clash against Netherlands. It was the first time something of this sort had taken place in T20Is in more than a decade.

Speaking of the current game, England won the toss and invited West Indies to bat first. Evin Lewis was dismissed on the first delivery of the game. The visitors managed to get to 55/1 at the end of the powerplay. The Men in Maroon were placed at 82/1 at the halfway stage.

Hope wasn't the only batter to have been dismissed in the late 40s. Johnson Charles (47 off 39) was another West Indian to have narrowly missed out on a half-century. Brisk cameos like Rovman Powell (34 off 15), Romario Shepherd (19 off 11), and Jason Holder (29* off nine) helped West Indies get to 196/6 at the end.

The series opener was won by England by a 21-run margin. Liam Dawson secured the Player of the Match accolade for a wonderful four-wicket haul (4/20 in four overs). Wicketkeeper-batter, Jos Buttler (96 off 59), fell four short of a well-deserved ton.
