India Women skipper Harmanpreet Kaur took centre stage in the third One-Day International against England Women, racking up her seventh century in the format on Tuesday, July 22 at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. With her sensational outing with, as the Indians batted first, Harmanpreet equalled the legendary Mithali Raj’s record of second-most centuries for India Women in ODI history. She now stands joint-second on the list as ace batter Smriti Mandhana sits at the top with 11 centuries.
Harmanpreet, also called Harry by teammates, batted with a brilliant strike-rate of 121.42 during her 84-ball stay at the crease, smashing an astonishing 102 runs. Her knock was the orchestrator behind the visiting side posting a dominating total of 318-5 at the end of 50 overs in the series decider. She started cautiously, but did not miss out on any lose deliveries, compiling 14 boundaries in her knock that brought her neck-to-neck with her former captain and teammate.
She had an able partner in Jemimah Rodrigues alongside as the duo added 110 runs for the fourth wicket. Jemimah too scored a dominant half-century and gave the perfect support to her captain. The Mumbai-born, who made 50 in her 50th ODI, came for a chat during the innings break and was delighted to be able to contribute in a brilliant partnership, which was filled with calculative approach.
“Didn't know it was my 50th game but it feels special. Anything for the country. Just glad to contribute a partnership [with Harmanpreet]. We decided, up to the 40th [over], we go 5-6 runs and over, then anything in our area we go for it,” she said.
The attacking batter also breached past the 4000-run mark in the 50-over internationals, which came in her 129th innings. The Punjab-born also has 19 half-centuries in the format, making her one of the most reliable middle-order batters for the Women in Blue over the years. Her knock of 102 was also the third century for the senior pro against England Women — the only opposition against whom she has multiple hundreds.
