England confirm new Test head coach and captain ahead of Pakistan series

England have officially ushered in a new era in Test cricket by confirming both a new head coach and captain ahead of their three-match Test series against Pakistan. The appointments come after a period of significant transition following the departure of the previous leadership duo, with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) opting for an experienced coaching figure and a familiar leader to guide the side forward.

The changes arrive at an important stage for England’s Test ambitions. With a demanding schedule that includes series against Pakistan, South Africa and Bangladesh before next summer’s Ashes, the ECB has made it clear that building a team capable of sustained success remains its top priority. The new leadership combination will now be tasked with carrying England into the next phase of their red-ball journey.

The ECB have appointed former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming as the new head coach of England’s men’s Test team, while Joe Root has been confirmed as the side’s new Test captain.

Fleming replaces Brendon McCullum following an extensive recruitment process in which he emerged as the unanimous choice of the ECB’s selection panel. However, the former New Zealand skipper will officially begin his tenure after England’s Test series against Pakistan, with Marcus Trescothick serving as interim head coach during the series.

Meanwhile, Root returns to the captaincy following the retirement of Ben Stokes from international cricket. England’s leading Test run-scorer previously captained the side between 2017 and 2022, leading the team in more Tests than any other England skipper. He recently stepped in as stand-in captain during the second Test against New Zealand, further strengthening the ECB’s confidence in handing him the role once again.

England believe the combination of proven coaching expertise and experienced leadership can help the team build on the progress made in recent years while targeting long-term success in Test cricket. Fleming arrives with one of the most decorated coaching resumes in franchise cricket. During his 18-year association with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), he guided the franchise to five IPL titles and multiple finals, while also coaching their sister teams in South Africa and the United States. He has additionally worked with Southern Brave (SOB) in The Hundred and enjoyed previous coaching and consultancy roles across international and domestic cricket.

Root, meanwhile, returns to leadership after continuing to establish himself as one of the greatest batters in England’s Test history. Since stepping down as captain in 2022, he has become England’s highest Test run-scorer and moved into the top five on the all-time list of leading Test run-getters.

England’s immediate focus now shifts to the Pakistan Test series before a busy red-ball calendar that also includes tours of South Africa and Bangladesh, along with the historic 150th anniversary Test in Melbourne. With a new coach and captain now in place, the ECB will hope the fresh leadership partnership can build a team capable of challenging consistently both at home and overseas.
