England are set to face Sri Lanka in a crucial Super Eight Group B clash of the T20 World Cup 2026 on February 22, 2026, at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.
England progressed to the Super Eights after finishing second in their group. Their only defeat came against the West Indies, while they edged past Nepal in a close contest and secured comfortable wins over Scotland and Italy to book their spot in the next stage.
Sri Lanka also ended as group runners-up, with their lone setback coming against Zimbabwe. Apart from that loss, they enjoyed a solid campaign, registering victories over Australia, Ireland, and Oman.
England and Sri Lanka have faced each other 17 times in T20Is, with England dominating the head-to-head record. The English side has won 13 matches, while Sri Lanka have managed just four victories. In T20 World Cup encounters, Sri Lanka have struggled significantly against England. They have not registered a win over the English side in the tournament since 2012 which the co-hosts of this year's World Cup hopes to break.
Jos Buttler has been England’s standout performer with the bat against Sri Lanka in T20Is. In 12 matches, the wicketkeeper-batter has accumulated 466 runs at an impressive average of 58.25 and a strike rate of 143.82. His record includes one century and three half-centuries. On the bowling front, left-arm spinner Adil Rashid could prove decisive, especially given the spin-friendly conditions in Sri Lanka. In 11 matches against Sri Lanka, Rashid has claimed 15 wickets at an excellent average of 14.73, while maintaining a superb economy rate of 5.66.
England defeated Sri Lanka by 12 runs in their most recent T20I meeting just before the World Cup, completing a series whitewash in the process. Batting first, England posted 128/9 in a low-scoring contest. Sam Curran anchored the innings with a fighting 58 off 48 balls. Sri Lanka’s bowlers were impressive, particularly Dushmantha Chameera, who delivered a superb spell of 5/24, while Matheesha Pathirana chipped in with 2/27 to restrict England.
However, Sri Lanka faltered in the chase and were bowled out for 116. Kusal Mendis was the top scorer with 26 runs, but the rest of the batting line-up struggled against England’s disciplined bowling attack. Jacob Bethell starred with the ball, claiming 4/11, while Will Jacks supported him brilliantly with 3/14 to seal the win.
