West Indies (WI) will look to square the series when they face Sri Lanka (SL) at the National Cricket Stadium in St. George's, Grenada, on Sunday, February 22.
The first ODI between the West Indies and Sri Lanka turned out to be a thrilling contest. Sri Lanka were asked to bat first at the National Cricket Stadium. Hasini Perera and Harshita Samarawickrama scored sedate half-centuries to take the tourists to 240/6 in their 50 overs.
In reply, the West Indies lost half their side for 80 runs inside 23 overs. However, Stafanie Taylor and Jannillea Glasgow brought the hosts back into the game with a gutsy 89-run stand off 102 balls. The partnership, however, ended with a run out as Taylor departed for 66. Glasgow was also dismissed soon after, and the onus was on Aaliyah Alleyne to take the team home. However, in the end, the Caribbean side was bowled out for 230 with two balls left to bowl.
Spinners are once again going to play a key role, especially in the middle overs. The batters will have to give themselves time in the middle before going for extravagant shots. The captain who wins the toss might bowl first. However, chasing might not be as easy as the pitch could slow down due to wear and tear.
Hayley Matthews (C), Qiana Joseph, Chinelle Henry, Stafanie Taylor, Deandra Dottin, Shemane Campbelle (WK), Jannillea Glasgow, Aaliyah Alleyne, Shawnisha Hector, Afy Fletcher, Karishma Ramharack.
Chamari Athapaththu (C), Vishmi Gunaratne, Hasini Perera, Harshita Samarawickrama, Kavisha Dilhari, Nilakshika de Silva, Kaushini Nuthyanganha (WK), Dewmi Vihanga, Nimasha Madushani, Malki Madara, Inoka Ranaweera.
Hayley Matthews scored just 13 runs off 26 balls in the first ODI. The West Indies captain is too good a batter to miss out too often. Matthews will look to lead her team from the front and set the foundation for the Caribbean side at the top of the order.
Inoka Ranaweera bowled a brilliant spell in the first ODI and would be high on confidence. She took the wickets of Shemaine Campbelle, Chinelle Henry, Jannillea Glasgow, and Shawnisha Hector. In her 10-over spell, Ranaweera gave away just 44 runs.
