With the IPL 2026 auction expected to take place between December 13 and 15, all 10 franchises are finalizing their retention and release strategies before the November 15 deadline. Several high-profile players including Sam Curran, Mitchell Starc, and David Miller are reportedly being released, signalling a major reshuffle before the next season. The auction, unlike the last two editions held overseas, is expected to return to India as the BCCI considers domestic venues for the event.
According to reports by CricBuzz, discussions with the BCCI are ongoing regarding the final auction schedule. The mini-auction format will continue this year, focusing on filling specific gaps rather than complete overhauls. However, teams like Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR), who endured poor campaigns in IPL 2025, are expected to make several bold decisions.
CSK, already benefiting from Ravichandran Ashwin’s retirement which frees up INR 9.75 crore in their purse, could release key players such as Curran, Devon Conway and Deepak Hooda to create space for fresh overseas signings. The franchise aims to bring in a younger core under the guidance of their revamped coaching setup.
Meanwhile, RR are believed to be considering a major shake-up after finishing near the bottom of the table. Reports suggest that Sanju Samson’s retention is uncertain unless a trade deal is finalized. The team is also reviewing the contracts of foreign spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana, though Kumar Sangakkara’s comeback as head coach could influence those decisions.

Beyond CSK and RR, other franchises are also preparing to part ways with some high-value stars. Starc, one of the marquee overseas pacers, is also expected to be released by Delhi Capitals after a mixed season in 2025. Miller could face a similar situation at Gujarat Titans, opening opportunities for fresh domestic batting talent.
Players like T Natarajan, Mayank Yadav, Akash Deep, and Rahul Tripathi are also in the mix for release, giving the upcoming auction a competitive edge. Venkatesh Iyer, who fetched INR 23.75 crore last year as KKR’s third-most expensive buy, could also find himself on the move if his performances fail to justify the price tag.
Among the players expected to command intense bidding wars, Australia all-rounder Cameron Green stands out. After missing the last auction due to injury, Green has already drawn interest from multiple franchises aiming to add depth in both batting and bowling departments. His availability could redefine team strategies during the 2026 auction.
