Here’s why KL Rahul went unsold in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 2026 auction

India vice-captain KL Rahul was among the biggest attractions at the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 2026 auction held on Friday, June 5. Given his stature in Indian cricket and recent performances, many expected the star wicketkeeper-batter to attract significant interest from franchises. However, the auction took an unexpected turn when Rahul’s name came up, leaving fans surprised and sparking discussions across the cricketing fraternity.
Rahul’s unsold status came as a major talking point, especially considering the form he displayed during IPL 2026 and his stature in Indian cricket. However, the decision appears to have been influenced more by scheduling and availability concerns rather than his cricketing credentials.
Rahul entered the auction with a base price of ₹2 lakh and was the second player to go under the hammer. Despite being one of Karnataka’s most accomplished cricketers, franchises chose not to bid for him during the opening round. The primary reason behind the lack of interest was the uncertainty surrounding his availability for the tournament. Rahul is currently part of India’s squad for the one-off Test against Afghanistan in New Chandigarh and has also been named the team’s vice-captain for the match.
In addition, the 33-year-old remains a key member of India’s ODI setup. The Men in Blue are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan immediately after the Test, with the third ODI set to be played on June 20 at Chennai’s MA Chidambaram Stadium. With international commitments expected to keep him occupied, franchises were understandably reluctant to invest in a player whose participation throughout the tournament could not be guaranteed.
The Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 2026 is scheduled to be played between June and July, a period during which India have a packed white-ball calendar. Following the Afghanistan ODI series, India will travel to Ireland for a two-match T20I series before heading to England for a five-match T20I assignment.
Although Rahul has not featured in India’s T20I side since the 2022 T20 World Cup semifinal against England, his involvement in other national duties and workload management remain significant factors. As a result, teams preferred to target players who would be available for the entire duration of the competition rather than spending resources on a marquee name with uncertain participation.

The lack of bids should not be viewed as a reflection of Rahul’s recent performances. The wicketkeeper-batter enjoyed a productive IPL 2026 campaign with the Delhi Capitals (DC), scoring 593 runs in 14 matches and finishing among the team’s standout performers.
Rahul continues to be one of India’s most experienced batters across formats and remains an important member of the national setup. His focus is currently on international cricket, with India preparing for a crucial home season. Meanwhile, several prominent Karnataka cricketers attracted attention in the auction, including Devdutt Padikkal, Mayank Agarwal, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Shreyas Gopal, Karun Nair and Manish Pandey.
While Rahul’s name generated plenty of buzz ahead of the auction, his unsold status ultimately appears to be a consequence of scheduling conflicts and availability concerns rather than a lack of demand for his services.
