Here’s why Kuldeep Yadav and Travis head will miss out on the remainder of the AUS vs IND T20I series

The ongoing Australia vs India T20I series has delivered a mix of drama and excitement, further amplified by sudden squad changes before the business end of the tour. The series opener at Canberra was abandoned due to rain, leaving both teams hungry for a result. Australia bounced back in the Melbourne T20I, clinching a commanding four-wicket win as they chased down India’s modest total inside 14 overs. However, India responded emphatically in the third T20I at Hobart, chasing 186 to record a five-wicket victory and set up a closely fought contest for the remaining matches, set to be played at Gold Coast and Brisbane.
As both sides gear up for the decisive fixtures, the absence of two-star performers—Kuldeep Yadav for India and Travis Head for Australia—has become headline news, with the moves driven by priorities extending beyond the shortest format.
In a significant decision, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially released left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep from the remainder of the T20I series in Australia. The team management made this request to facilitate his preparation for India’s upcoming Test series against South Africa, starting November 14. Kuldeep has now been added to the India A squad for their second unofficial Test against South Africa A in Bengaluru, commencing November 6. The BCCI statement explained that this move is designed to help Kuldeep get valuable red-ball game time in advance of the highly anticipated Test series.
Providing match rhythm in longer format conditions—especially away from home—is critical for Kuldeep, who has shown prowess as a red-ball bowler in subcontinent and overseas conditions. The team’s strategic focus on the South Africa series demonstrates how player workload and form management are increasingly dictating squad adjustments. Kuldeep’s selection for India A is part of a broader approach by BCCI to offer Test-bound players early exposure to conditions likely to be encountered in the main series.

Australian batter Head, too, will miss the remainder of the T20I leg to focus on regaining form with his state side in the Sheffield Shield ahead of the crucial Ashes series. After a notable dip in white-ball form—Head hasn’t scored more than 31 in his last eight innings—Australian selectors have backed him to return to the domestic circuit, where a string of strong red-ball performances could help rekindle his confidence before the 2025-26 Ashes. Head now joins a list of senior Australian players, including Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Sean Abbott, opting for state cricket as preparation for the Ashes.
The decision underlines Australia’s emphasis on the Test format and the need for players to hit peak form before facing England in a marquee series. This shift demonstrates the intricate balancing act between format commitments, with both nations prioritizing Test match readiness when international calendars overlap.
