'I would have been divorced' – Justin Langer reveals hilarious consequences if he had accepted England Test coach job

Former Australia coach Justin Langer was asked during a discussion session in Mackay whether he had been approached to coach England. The question prompted a candid and humorous response about the personal sacrifices such a role would have demanded.

Langer spoke with journalist Tom Morris on August 23, 2026. Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain, was present during the exchange and reacted with a cheeky smile to Langer's remarks.

"No, I probably would've got divorced if I did and probably not just from my wife," Langer said on 7Cricket.

"I would have been divorced, literally, from my wife and daughters but also from Ricky (Ponting) and (Matthew) Hayden and some of my other mates." he added.

Beyond the personal toll on his family and friendships, Langer identified another significant barrier to taking on the England role. He reflected on the emotional and symbolic weight of representing a nation through its national anthem, a commitment he felt unable to make.

Langer also spoke about Stephen Fleming taking up a prominent coaching role, backing the former New Zealand captain to thrive in a high-pressure environment.

"I think it was just perfect timing. Stephen Fleming had come out of Chennai, and they saw the opportunity and grabbed hold of Stephen Fleming. He'll be calm. He's got a great cricket mind," Langer said.

Speaking about England Test team, they are currently in action with Pakistan in a three-match series. The first game at Headingley was comfortably won by an innings and 103 runs. They will look to seal the series when they meet in the second Test at Lord's, London starting on August 27. The third Test is scheduled on September 9 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.
