If Shami is fit and available, India should use his experience in 2027 World Cup: Zaheer Khan
Zaheer Khan has backed Mohammed Shami for inclusion in India's 2027 ODI World Cup squad, emphasising the value of the veteran pacer's experience and recent domestic form. Shami's performances in domestic cricket have drawn attention from former players and analysts as India prepares for the tournament in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia.
Zaheer Khan stated that when a player performs at the level Shami has shown, he merits consideration for the national team. Khan highlighted the importance of having an experienced bowler available for the World Cup campaign, particularly given the conditions expected in South Africa.
"When someone performs this well, he should definitely be in Team India's scheme of things. He should play the World Cup and be part of the team," Zaheer Khan was quoted as saying by myKhel.
"If Mohammed Shami is fit and available, India should take an experienced bowler like him to South Africa.", he added.
Shami's domestic record last season underscores his current form. He claimed 37 wickets across seven Ranji Trophy matches and took 15 wickets in seven Vijay Hazare Trophy games, demonstrating consistent performance at the first-class and List A levels.
Shami's history at World Cups adds weight to Khan's argument. At the 2023 ODI World Cup, Shami finished as India's leading wicket-taker with 24 wickets, a remarkable achievement that showcased his ability to perform on the global stage when called upon.
Mohammed Badruddin, Shami's childhood coach, has also expressed confidence in the pacer's readiness. Badruddin noted that Shami retains the capability to contribute at the highest level and would be prepared to serve the country if required.
Badruddin emphasised the specific challenges of bowling in South African conditions, stating that experience in such environments is crucial.
"It is not easy to bowl in South Africa. You need experience there," Badruddin said, underscoring why a seasoned bowler like Shami could prove valuable.

Zaheer Khan advised Shami to focus on what lies within his control, and that is to contribute with the ball whenever he is playing.
"He has to just look at how he can contribute and do what's within his control," Khan said, suggesting that consistent domestic performances remain the pathway to international selection.
