IND vs OMN, Asia Cup 2025: Here’s why Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy are not playing today’s match

India face Oman in their final Group A encounter of the Asia Cup 2025 at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi on September 19, with captain Suryakumar Yadav choosing to bat first after winning the toss. Having already secured Super 4 qualification with dominant victories over UAE and Pakistan, the Men in Blue enter this dead rubber with strategic rotation in mind.
Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakaravarthy’s absence from today’s playing XI represents a calculated decision by the team management to preserve India’s pace spearhead and mystery spinner for crucial upcoming matches. The world’s leading T20I bowler has been strategically rested despite being fully fit, with no injury concerns surrounding his exclusion.
“We have two changes – Harshit comes in, one more guy comes in, I have become like Rohit,” Suryakumar Yadav revealed during the toss, confirming Arshdeep Singh‘s return alongside Harshit Rana‘s inclusion. This strategic shuffle allows India to test bench strength while keeping Bumrah and Chakaravarthy fresh for Sunday’s Super 4 clash against Pakistan.
The decision aligns with BCCI’s established workload management protocols for Bumrah, who has been carefully monitored following previous injury concerns. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar endorsed this approach, suggesting Bumrah should be rested even for the Pakistan match to ensure peak fitness for the Asia Cup final.

Suryakumar’s decision to bat first marks India’s inaugural experience with setting targets in Asia Cup 2025, having chased successfully in their previous encounters. “We have not batted first in this competition and we want to know our depth. Having game time is important going into the Super 4s,” Yadav explained at the toss.
The batting-first strategy serves multiple purposes for India’s campaign momentum. With middle-order batters having limited opportunities in low-scoring chases, batting first provides crucial match practice ahead of Super 4 challenges. Sheikh Zayed Stadium’s recent trends favor teams batting first, with three of five Asia Cup matches won by sides setting targets.
This represents India’s 250th T20 International match, making them only the second team globally to reach this milestone. The strategic approach reflects coach Gautam Gambhir‘s philosophy of utilizing dead rubbers for squad depth assessment while maintaining competitive intensity ahead of their Pakistan rematch scheduled for September 21.
