IND vs SA: Cheteshwar Pujara picks the batting position of Dhruv Jurel for the first Test

The highly anticipated India vs South Africa Test series is set to begin on November 14 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. With both teams eager to start strong in the two-match contest, India find themselves with an interesting selection puzzle at the wicketkeeper-batter position. Dhruv Jurel, who is fresh from twin centuries in the second unofficial Test against South Africa A, is widely expected to feature in the playing XI. However, the big question remains — if he gets the nod, where will he bat in India’s lineup?
Veteran India batter Cheteshwar Pujara has backed Dhruv Jurel to retain his impressive form and secure a place in India’s XI for the first Test. Speaking to JioHotstar, Pujara stated that the young wicketkeeper-batter has shown remarkable growth and temperament, especially during pressure situations.
“Firstly, with the kind of form he is in, Dhruv Jurel definitely deserves a spot in the playing XI,” Pujara said, acknowledging Jurel’s recent consistency and responsibility with the bat.
Pujara feels the No. 6 position is the most suitable for Jurel in the current team structure. With the middle order needing stability and the ability to build partnerships, the spot provides the ideal balance for a wicketkeeper-batter who can shift gears when needed.
“I believe he will bat at number six, that’s my guess,” Pujara added, highlighting that Jurel’s game awareness and adaptability make him a natural fit for that batting slot.
The senior batter also shed light on India’s likely bowling combination for the first Test. Considering the conditions at Eden Gardens, Pujara expects India to rely heavily on their spin department.
“Depending on the pitch, India will most likely go with three spinners and two seamers. That’s how I see the team combination and how Jurel fits into the XI,” he explained, suggesting a strategy historically effective in Indian home Tests.

Even as Jurel pushes his case with strong performances, the spotlight intensifies with Rishabh Pant back in the Test setup. Pant’s explosive batting and game-changing ability have made him India’s premier wicketkeeper in red-ball cricket. Yet, Jurel’s recent form ensures that competition for the role is healthier than ever.
Jurel has showcased maturity beyond his experience, demonstrating composure and a willingness to take responsibility during challenging phases of play. These traits, combined with the technical refinement he has shown in recent outings, have impressed India’s think tank and former players alike.
While Pant remains India’s first-choice option, there is growing belief that Jurel’s rise provides the team with depth and a reliable backup who can step in seamlessly. His success against South Africa A has not only boosted his confidence but also created a positive selection headache for the team management.
