‘India is the biggest cricket market’ - Arun Dhumal backs BBL’s Chennai opener

The decision by the Big Bash League (BBL) to stage its season-opening match in India has received strong support from IPL chairman Arun Dhumal, who believes the move underscores India's unparalleled influence in world cricket. The BBL opener, scheduled to be held at the iconic M. A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai this December, marks a significant step in the Australian league's efforts to broaden its global footprint and connect with new audiences.

Dhumal stated that India's status as cricket's largest and most influential market makes it a natural destination for international cricket properties seeking to expand their reach and strengthen their commercial presence. He suggested that Cricket Australia was motivated by both sporting and business considerations in choosing India as the venue for the season opener.

Emphasising India's immense cricket fan base and central role in the global cricket ecosystem, Dhumal said the decision reflects the growing recognition of the country's importance in shaping the sport's future and driving its worldwide growth.

"See, India is the biggest cricket market. So definitely, Cricket Australia would want to capitalize on that. And we wish them all the best for their Big Bash inaugural game this season,” said Dhumal as quoted by Outlook.

The move is expected to give the Big Bash League (BBL) greater visibility among Indian fans while further strengthening ties between two of cricket's most influential governing bodies. With India continuing to drive global viewership, sponsorship revenue, and digital engagement across formats, overseas leagues have increasingly sought opportunities to connect with the country's vast cricket audience.

Dhumal also linked the BBL's expansion strategy to cricket's broader international ambitions. With the sport set to make its return to the Olympic Games at 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, he believes cricket is entering a period of unprecedented global growth and exposure.

According to Dhumal, the game's inclusion in the Olympics is expected to unlock new markets, attract fresh audiences, and create significant opportunities for leagues and governing bodies worldwide.

"India, being the leader in world cricket, has a lot of scope to add to world cricket. He further added, "Since now cricket is becoming part of Olympics, it augurs very well for the game, for its global footprint to reach to the length and breadth across the globe. I'm sure they would have done their calculations and they are expecting a good boost to their domestic tournament," said Dhumal.
