IPL 2026: Here’s why Mumbai Indians coach Kieron Pollard has been reprimanded after PBKS clash

The IPL 2026 clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) produced plenty of drama both on and off the field. While Mumbai pulled off a thrilling last-ball chase to secure an important victory, the post-match headlines were dominated by disciplinary action against MI batting coach Kieron Pollard. The former West Indies all-rounder has officially been reprimanded by the IPL Governing Council following an incident involving the fourth umpire during the closing stages of the match.
The incident occurred during the 19th over of Mumbai’s chase when tensions were running high inside the stadium. Chasing a challenging 201-run target, MI were still under pressure despite a sensational counterattack from Tilak Varma.
According to the IPL’s official statement, Pollard was heard using abusive language directed towards the fourth umpire from the Mumbai dugout. The situation escalated quickly enough for match officials to formally report the matter after the game. While the exact reason behind Pollard’s frustration was not publicly disclosed, the intense nature of the contest and the pressure-filled closing overs appeared to contribute to the outburst.
Pollard was found guilty of breaching Article 2.3 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials, which specifically relates to the “use of an audible obscenity during a match.”
As a result, the Mumbai Indians coach has been fined 15% of his match fee and handed one demerit point. The IPL released an official statement confirming the sanction:
“Kieron Pollard, Batting Coach, Mumbai Indians has been fined 15% of his applicable match fee and accumulated one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.”
The statement further added that Pollard admitted to the offence and accepted the punishment imposed by match referee Pankaj Dharmani, meaning no formal hearing was required. This is not the first time Pollard has landed in disciplinary trouble during his long association with the IPL. The former MI superstar has previously faced penalties for breaches of the code during his playing career as well.

Despite the controversy, the Mumbai Indians walked away with a crucial six-wicket victory in one of the most entertaining matches of IPL 2026. The chase was powered by an extraordinary innings from Tilak, who smashed an unbeaten 75 off just 33 deliveries. The left-hander completely shifted momentum with fearless strokeplay, including a monstrous 106-metre six against Yuzvendra Chahal.
Sherfane Rutherford also played a valuable supporting role before Will Jacks provided the finishing touches with a quick cameo at the death. The dramatic win marked Mumbai’s fourth victory of the season and provided a rare positive moment in an otherwise difficult IPL 2026 campaign for the five-time champions.
