IPL 2026 : MI duo Deepak Chahar and Robin Minz channel Ajmal-Malik meme with comical dropped catch vs KKR

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season continues to dish out unforgettable drama, but not all of it is the kind coaches like to see. During the high-stakes 65th match of the tournament at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) hosted the Mumbai Indians (MI). While the match carried heavy implications for the standings, it will forever be remembered for an astonishingly chaotic fielding gaffe. The comical moment instantly went viral, leaving MI skipper Hardik Pandya physically hidden in utter exasperation.
The defining moment of comedic tragedy struck in the 10th over of KKR’s pursuit of a 148-run target. On delivery 9.2, Hardik Pandya, returning to action after a grueling battle with back spasms, steamed in and executed a perfectly targeted short ball to the newly arrived Rovman Powell. The aggressive West Indies went for a heavy pull shot but could only top-edge it high into the night sky toward the deep-backward square leg boundary.
What followed was a total collapse in communication that mirrored one of cricket’s most iconic internet memes. Deepak Chahar sprinted hard to his left from fine leg, while substitute fielder Robin Minz raced over from square leg. As the ball hung in the air, both fielders converged closely at the drop zone. However, an acute lack of calling caused an unexpected standstill. Minz pulled out a fraction of a second earlier, which distracted Chahar enough to make him halt his own run. The ball dropped harmlessly right between them without touching a glove.
The bizarre mix-up was a near-perfect recreation of Pakistan‘s infamous 2008 dropped catch between Saeed Ajmal and Shoaib Malik against Chris Gayle. Just like that legendary blunder, an intense argument instantly erupted between Chahar and Minz. Meanwhile, a devastated Hardik Pandya could only pull his jersey completely over his face to hide his disappointment. Powell, who was batting on just 14 off 9 balls at the time, made MI pay dearly for the reprieve. He went on to forge a match-defining 64-run partnership for the fourth wicket with veteran Manish Pandey. Powell eventual finished with a brisk 40 off 30 deliveries, hammering 4 fours and two maximums.

The massive fielding error turned out to be the final nail in the coffin for Mumbai’s leaky defense, effectively boosting KKR’s playoff credentials. Batting first, Mumbai Indians struggled heavily to generate any real momentum. While opener Ryan Rickelton played a lone-wolf anchoring hand with a gritty 67 off 51 balls, the rest of the star-studded lineup faltered. Rohit Sharma was dismissed cheaply for 15 by Saurabh Dubey, and Suryakumar Yadav managed just 15 runs before Dubey dismantled his stumps.
Pandya chipped in with a fighting 26 off 27 balls before falling to Sunil Narine, who bowled an incredibly tight spell of 1/13 in his 4 overs. A late unbeaten cameo by Corbin Bosch (32* off 18 balls) pushed MI to a modest total of 147/8 in their allotted 20 overs. KKR’s bowling was effectively spearheaded by Saurabh Dubey (2/34) and Cameron Green (2/23).
In reply, KKR brushed off early stumbles when Finn Allen was cleaned up by Chahar for just 8, leaving them at a precarious 54/3 in 7.1 overs. However, Player of the Match Manish Pandey stood firm with a crucial, calculated 45 off 33 balls. Alongside Powell’s capitalized second life, KKR comfortably cruised across the finish line to reach 148/6 with 7 balls to spare, wrapping up a massive 4-wicket win.
