IPL 2026: Michael Vaughan explains why Hardik Pandya should play for KKR in the next season

The IPL 2026 season for Mumbai Indians (MI) has sparked several conversations around the future of the franchise and some of its senior players. Following another disappointing campaign for the five-time champions, former England captain Michael Vaughan made a bold suggestion involving Hardik Pandya and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) that quickly caught fans’ attention. While discussing Mumbai’s struggles and KKR’s possible plans for next season, Vaughan proposed a move that could potentially reshape the leadership dynamics of both franchises ahead of IPL 2027.
Speaking during a discussion on Cricbuzz, Vaughan openly questioned the Mumbai Indians decision to bring Hardik back into the side after his successful stint with the Gujarat Titans (GT). When asked whether Mumbai should continue with Hardik, Vaughan responded bluntly, saying:
“Release. Replace him with Cameron Green. No. I have seen enough. I didn’t really see the dynamic of bringing him back. He was doing well with the Gujarat Titans, won a title there with a different set of players and a different coach. I feel Mumbai have got too many chefs in the kitchen. If he wants to carry on as captain, then he’d better be with a fresh set of captains. Maybe KKR. Kolkata will be looking for a new captain. That is why the Green-Hardik swap.”
Former KKR team director Joy Bhattacharjya also supported the idea of Mumbai moving on from Hardik after three underwhelming seasons under his leadership.

Mumbai Indians once again endured a frustrating IPL season, failing to qualify for the playoffs after struggling for consistency throughout the campaign. Their latest defeat against KKR further highlighted the issues that have affected the side this year. Batting first on a slow Eden Gardens surface, MI managed only 147/8 after suffering another top-order collapse. Hardik just scored 26 runs, while Corbin Bosch provided late acceleration with an unbeaten cameo.
However, KKR comfortably chased down the target in 18.5 overs to keep their own playoff hopes alive, with Manish Pandey and Rovman Powell playing crucial knocks. Following the dismissal of Powell, Rinku Singh played a cameo of 9 runs from just 5 deliveries, guiding KKR home safely. Hardik himself has struggled to make a major impact this season, managing 172 runs and 4 wickets in nine matches. With MI now out of playoff contention, discussions around possible retention changes and leadership decisions are expected to dominate the headlines heading into IPL 2027.
