Is Manav Suthar the new Ravindra Jadeja for Indian team? Russel Arnold gives hot take

Manav Suthar has impressed in his early Test appearances for India, drawing comparisons to established all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The 23-year-old left-arm spinner and left-handed batter has shown technical qualities that have caught the attention of cricket observers. Indian team management views Suthar as an ideal replacement for Jadeja as the veteran looks towards the later stages of his career.

Former Sri Lankan cricketer Russell Arnold has offered a measured perspective on the Suthar-Jadeja comparison. Arnold acknowledged Suthar's early promise but cautioned against drawing premature conclusions about his potential to match Jadeja's achievements.

"Time will tell. We've seen lots of players come in with a bang and perform, but as a player, batter, bowler, or whoever you are, you need to evolve. You need to better your game. You need to stay in that zone where you focus on each step," Arnold responded to CricTracker's query during an interaction arranged by Sony Sports Network.

"To get that success, Suthar still hasn't played in foreign conditions. Why I say that is it's still in the subcontinent, where spin controls the game. So to put him into that league, we're still way off, but there are signs that he can do it, because his action is so simple; he's very disciplined; he's very patient; and those are what he will need. But, really, it's too early to say," he added.

Suthar's recent performance in India's Test series against Sri Lanka demonstrated his technical ability with the ball. In the first Test at Galle, Suthar took 4 wickets for 76 runs, helping bowl Sri Lanka out for 284. His bowling figures were backed by impressive turn statistics, with 74 per cent of his deliveries turning more than 4.5 degrees, the highest among all spinners in the match. By comparison, Ravindra Jadeja recorded 58.2 per cent of deliveries with a turn exceeding 4.5 degrees in the same match.

He emphasised that player development extends beyond early success and technical ability. The former cricketer highlighted the importance of how players respond to challenges and setbacks during their careers. Arnold noted that temperament and personal values play a crucial role in determining whether a player can sustain excellence over time.

"Because a lot of players come and go, there'll be a dip in form, and then it depends on how they react to that. For all that, those are all skills. Skills within maybe your temperament or your values that you carry. That is still in question," Arnold said.

Jadeja, 37, has established himself as one of India's premier all-rounders across formats. The left-handed batter and left-arm orthodox spin bowler recently became the fifth Indian to register 350 Test wickets during the ongoing first Test against Sri Lanka. Suthar's emergence as a potential successor represents a significant development in India's spin bowling plans, though Arnold's assessment suggests the young player must first prove his credentials in challenging overseas conditions before such comparisons gain substance.
