Jason Smith ruled out of T20I Tri-series with adductor strain

Jason Smith has been ruled out of South Africa's T20I Tri-series in Windhoek after sustaining a right adductor muscle strain. The 31-year-old all-rounder will miss the entire tournament, which runs from August 28 to September 6, 2026.

No direct replacement has been called up in his place. Instead, the selectors are looking to uncapped Titans all-rounders Duan Jansen and Eathan Bosch, who are already in the squad and are now expected to make their Proteas debuts during the series.

Smith's withdrawal adds to a string of injury setbacks in the South African camp ahead of the Namibia tour. Kagiso Rabada had already been sidelined with a hamstring strain sustained during winter training, while Senuran Muthusamy pulled out of the SA 'A' series owing to a lower-back spasm.

Duan Jansen is a 26-year-old all-rounder from the Titans. He is the twin brother of South Africa Test seamer Marco Jansen, and the Namibia assignment marks his first call-up to the senior Proteas setup. His inclusion had already attracted attention before Smith's injury, and he is now firmly in line for a debut appearance in Windhoek.

Eathan Bosch is also an uncapped all-rounder from the Titans. With Smith unavailable, both players are expected to feature during the T20I Tri-series, giving the selectors a chance to evaluate fresh options in a competitive multi-team environment.

The presence of two uncapped Titans players in the squad points to the depth South Africa is looking to develop across formats, particularly with several senior players missing through injury as the southern hemisphere summer approaches.

Following the T20I Tri-series, South Africa are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against Namibia beginning September 9, 2026. Smith's availability for that leg of the tour remains uncertain given the nature of an adductor muscle injury.

Smith's form leading into this tour had also been under scrutiny. He managed limited opportunities with the bat during the SA 'A' tour to England in the winter, and his return to full fitness will be monitored closely before any decision is made on his involvement in the ODI matches.

The Windhoek Tri-series therefore carries added weight for Jansen and Bosch. Strong performances could strengthen their cases for selection across both formats as South Africa look to broaden their options ahead of a busy international schedule.
