Khaled Ahmed signs for Kent to join Hasan Mahmud for county season run-in
Kent have confirmed the signing of Bangladesh right-arm seam bowler Khaled Ahmed for four red-ball fixtures in the county season run-in. The 33-year-old arrives at Canterbury as the second Bangladesh overseas recruit at the club this season, joining international teammate Hasan Mahmud in the Kent attack.
Khaled made his first-class debut for Sylhet in 2015 and has since taken 190 wickets across 70 first-class appearances. He entered Test cricket for Bangladesh in 2018 and has gone on to represent the national side in 18 Tests. The exact wicket tally at Test level remains unresolved and has been withheld from this article pending verification.
"It’s an honour for me to play county cricket and join a club with a big history such as Kent. This is an important part of our season and I am determined to help the team achieve promotion. When I first heard of the news, it was an easy decision to say yes. Both Hasan and my agent have told me lots of good things about their experience with Kent and how much of a family club it is. “I hope that I will make Kent’s members and supporters, as well as fans back in Bangladesh, proud," Ahmed said, as quoted by KentOnline.
Kent head coach Adam Hollioake has been steering the county towards County Championship Division 2 promotion, and the club's director of cricket Simon Cook outlined the thinking behind the signing. The addition of Khaled gives Kent a proven first-class wicket-taker to complement Hasan as the county enters the decisive closing stages of the season. With the bulk of their remaining fixtures at home in Canterbury, the management now has the option to manage workloads across their frontline seamers without weakening the attack.
"We’re delighted to welcome Khaled to Canterbury alongside Hasan this September. We wanted to add a bowler who could immediately strengthen our squad and give us greater flexibility through the final stages of the season. With three of our final four games at home, we can stick with a formula that worked well in the first half of the year while also having the flexibility to rest and rotate our front-line bowlers without compromising performance levels. It’s great to see that so many Bangladeshi cricket fans have started following Kent since Hasan’s first stint here earlier this summer and we hope that Khaled’s arrival, too, will help this continue." Cook said, via the aforementioned source.
