Zimbabwe produced a spirited all-round performance to defeat Bangladesh by 25 runs in the opening ODI at the Harare Sports Club on Tuesday. After being bowled out for a modest 141, the hosts responded with a sensational bowling display to dismiss Bangladesh for just 116 in 33.1 overs. Left-arm seamer Newman Nyamhuri was named Player of the Match for his valuable contribution with both bat and ball as Zimbabwe took a 1-0 lead in the series.
Bangladesh made the perfect start after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. Their pace attack dominated the Zimbabwean batting line-up, with Nahid Rana producing one of the finest bowling performances in Bangladesh’s ODI history. The young fast bowler ripped through the middle order to claim remarkable figures of 6 for 21 from his 10-over spell, leaving Zimbabwe struggling for momentum throughout the innings.
Zimbabwe’s top order failed to build substantial partnerships. Innocent Kaia top-scored among the specialist batters with 26 off 39 balls, while Ben Curran (18) and Brian Bennett (17) got starts but could not convert them into meaningful scores. Captain Craig Ervine departed for a first-ball duck, while Sikandar Raza and Wesley Madhevere also failed to make an impact.
With the hosts reeling, the lower order showed commendable resistance. Nyamhuri played a fearless knock of 33 from 51 deliveries, striking five boundaries, while Richard Ngarava added a crucial 27 off 41 balls. Their partnership helped Zimbabwe stretch the total to 141 before Mehidy Hasan Miraz wrapped up the innings with the final wicket. Taskin Ahmed chipped in with two wickets, while Mustafizur Rahman bowled economically despite going wicketless.

Chasing only 142, Bangladesh appeared to have a straightforward task but quickly found themselves under immense pressure. Ngarava struck early to remove both openers before the experienced Blessing Muzarabani and Brad Evans tightened the screws with disciplined pace bowling.
Bangladesh’s top order crumbled as Soumya Sarkar, Tanzid Hasan Tamim and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto all departed cheaply, reducing the visitors to a precarious position. Towhid Hridoy attempted to rebuild the innings with a patient 25 off 58 balls, while wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan played the most fluent knock of the chase, scoring 31 from 44 deliveries with three boundaries and a six.
However, Zimbabwe’s bowlers never allowed Bangladesh to settle. Evans struck at crucial moments to finish with three wickets, while Ngarava also claimed three scalps. Nyamhuri capped off an outstanding all-round outing by taking two wickets, and Muzarabani added two more as Bangladesh’s lower order folded without mounting a serious challenge. Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 116, falling 25 runs short in a low-scoring contest dominated by the bowlers.
