As the 2026 Major League Cricket (MLC) season enters its crucial middle phase, table-toppers San Francisco Unicorns have been dealt a significant setback in their pursuit of the title. The franchise has confirmed that veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin will miss the remainder of the tournament due to a right knee injury. With the playoffs race intensifying and every match carrying added importance, losing an experienced campaigner like Ashwin comes as a blow, even though he featured only once this season. The Unicorns have acted swiftly by bringing in experienced Australian pacer as Ashwin’s replacement for the rest of the competition.
Ashwin’s much-anticipated debut season in Major League Cricket has come to an abrupt end after the San Francisco Unicorns confirmed that the former India international has been ruled out with a right knee injury. The 39-year-old created history earlier this year when he signed with the Unicorns, becoming one of the biggest Indian names to represent an overseas franchise following his retirement from Indian cricket. His arrival was viewed as a landmark moment for MLC, highlighting the league’s growing appeal and ambition to attract some of the sport’s most accomplished players.
However, Ashwin’s stay in the competition proved to be short-lived. He appeared in just one match against the Texas Super Kings, where he bowled two overs, conceded 24 runs and was unable to pick up a wicket. Announcing the news, the San Francisco Unicorns acknowledged the disappointment supporters would feel while expressing hope that the veteran spinner would return to the franchise in the future.
The franchise wished Ashwin a speedy recovery and thanked him for his contribution during his brief stint with the team. Reacting to the setback, Ashwin admitted he was disappointed that his campaign had ended early but accepted that stepping away was the right decision because of the injury. He also expressed gratitude to his teammates, coaching staff, franchise officials and supporters for making his time with the Unicorns a memorable experience. Ashwin added that although he would no longer be available on the field, he would continue cheering the team as they chase the MLC title.
The latest setback follows another knee-related issue that had earlier forced Ashwin to withdraw from the Big Bash League. It remains unclear whether the current injury is linked to that previous problem.

To fill the void left by Ashwin, the San Francisco Unicorns have signed veteran Australian fast bowler Peter Siddle for the remainder of MLC 2026.
The tournament organisers have officially approved Siddle as Ashwin’s replacement, allowing the experienced seamer to join the squad immediately. Siddle brings years of international and franchise cricket experience, giving the Unicorns another seasoned campaigner as they prepare for the decisive stages of the tournament. Despite Ashwin’s absence, the Unicorns remain in a strong position. They currently sit at the top of the six-team standings with five victories from eight matches and are well placed to secure a playoff berth.
With Siddle now joining the squad, the franchise will hope his experience and ability with the new ball can strengthen their bowling attack as they look to maintain their momentum and push for their maiden Major League Cricket title.
