Shreyas Iyer vs Suryakumar Yadav: Comparison after first five matches as captain
India are currently enduring a disappointing run in T20I cricket, having failed to register a victory in their first five matches under the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. Out of these five games, India have suffered four defeats, while one match ended with no result. After taking over the leadership from Suryakumar Yadav, Iyer has found it difficult to guide the team to success despite several changes to the playing combination.
Shreyas Iyer was appointed India's T20I captain after an impressive Indian Premier League campaign, where his leadership and consistency earned widespread praise. However, his start as the national team's captain has been far from ideal. India began his tenure with a two-match T20I series against Ireland, where the visitors were whitewashed 2-0. The batting unit struggled throughout the series, failing to build partnerships or post competitive totals, while the bowlers also found it difficult to contain the opposition.
The challenges continued on the tour of England. The opening T20I of the five-match series was abandoned due to rain without a result. In the next two matches, England outplayed India in all departments to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the series. Despite making multiple changes to the playing XI and trying different combinations, Iyer is still searching for his first victory as India's T20I captain. With the series entering a crucial phase, India will be hoping to regroup quickly, improve their performances with both bat and ball, and avoid another series defeat.
In contrast, Suryakumar Yadav enjoyed a dream start to his captaincy stint. He took charge of India during the five-match home T20I series against Australia and guided the team to an impressive 4-1 series victory. His fearless approach, aggressive tactics, and calm decision-making helped India dominate the visitors throughout the contest. Suryakumar also led by example with the bat, playing several match-winning knocks that put Australia under constant pressure.
