‘That wouldn’t be fair’ - Ravi Bopara urges patience amid Ben Stokes' nightclub controversy

Former England all-rounder Ravi Bopara has weighed in on the controversy surrounding England Test captain Ben Stokes, urging fans and experts alike to avoid jumping to conclusions while the ongoing investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) runs its course.

Stokes has come under the spotlight following reports linking him to a nightclub incident involving a Saracens rugby player. The England skipper, along with fast bowler Gus Atkinson, is currently being investigated by the ECB for an alleged breach of team curfew regulations after England’s victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Lord’s.

According to reports, the incident allegedly went beyond a curfew violation, with claims suggesting that Stokes and Atkinson were involved in a physical altercation during the night out. While the details remain under investigation, the episode has sparked widespread discussion about player conduct and leadership standards within the England setup.

The development comes at a time when English cricket has already faced criticism over player behaviour, particularly following concerns raised about the team’s drinking culture during the Ashes tour of Australia earlier this year. Amid the growing scrutiny, speculation has also emerged regarding Stokes’ future in international cricket, with reports suggesting retirement could be under consideration.

Bopara stressed the need for a fair and thorough process before any judgments are made, highlighting Stokes’ importance to English cricket.

“I think it’s important that the right process is taken and we don’t jump to any conclusions, because that wouldn’t be fair on Ben (Stokes) or English cricket. Ben’s a huge figure for English cricket and with that comes huge responsibility, like any top-level sport or any elite player. Let’s just hope the correct process is taken and then everything comes to a conclusion,” Bopara said on Sky Cricket.

The former England all-rounder also addressed the retirement rumours surrounding Stokes, stating that it would be unfortunate if the all-rounder decided to walk away from the game because of the current controversy.

“That (retirement) would be a sad way to go. If it is because of that, then that would be a very sad way to go. I think that would be a little bit extreme. If he’s retiring for other reasons, whether he’s had enough of playing cricket or his body can’t handle it, that’s a different story. It would be a shame to see him go on the back of this situation,” he concluded.

The second Test match between England and New Zealand will be played on June 17 at the Kennington Oval, London, with the home side leading the series by a margin of 1-0.
