'They’ve shown remarkable consistency' - Ashwin credits Gujarat Titans for composed run chase against Punjab Kings

Ravichandran Ashwin has praised the way Gujarat Titans approached their run chase against Punjab Kings in a last-over thriller during Match 46 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Sunday, May 03. This five-wicket win solidified the Ahmedabad-based side's fifth position on the points table as they now have 12 points after completing their 10th match of the season.
Ashwin has said that a composed approach helped GT come on top of the opposition. According to him, the Titans' batting unit is built on following methods rather than going with an ultra-aggressive mindset, which allows them to assess the conditions better and execute their plans in the run chase accordingly. Ashwin credited the GT management after the side had shown a consistent approach.
"Gujarat Titans were once again incredibly composed in the way they approached the chase. Their batting may not always look explosive, but it’s highly methodical and built around understanding conditions. On pitches like these, where 160–170 is a competitive score, it’s about controlling the game and executing your plans rather than chasing big numbers," Ashwin said via JioStar.
"They’ve shown remarkable consistency over the years with this approach, and credit goes to both the management and the players for sticking to their process and getting the job done under pressure," the cricketer-turned-commentator added on GT's victory.
Ashwin also hailed Washington Sundar for being a responsible batter in the middle as the run chase approached a tricky phase. The former India cricketer showered praise on Sundar for having risen to the occasion under an immense amount of pressure and delivering the goods when his team needed it the most.
"Washington Sundar’s innings was extremely important because it addressed a key question around Gujarat Titans’ middle order. While a lot of their runs come from the top three, contributions like this show the depth they have. Sundar has often been used as a flexible option, but he stepped up, handled the pressure well, and ensured the chase was completed. It might not have looked flashy, but it was a very composed and clinical effort to get the team over the line."
