Cricket West Indies (CWI) have revealed their list of centrally contracted players for the 2025-26 season, beginning October 1. The new cycle has brought significant changes, with former Test captain Kraigg Brathwaite missing out on a retainer contract. Joshua Da Silva and Kavem Hodge are also absent.

The exclusion of Brathwaite stands out as the most notable decision. The seasoned opener, who has carried West Indies’ Test batting for several years, has been left out as selectors opt for a shift in direction. Da Silva, a dependable wicketkeeper-batter, and Hodge, who recently featured in the Test middle-order, also find themselves outside the central contract setup.

Taking their places are Justin Greaves, who impressed with his all-round skills, Sherfane Rutherford, a destructive left-handed batter known for his T20 exploits, and left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican, who continues to offer depth in the longest format. Their inclusion highlights the board’s intention to balance experience with players who can make an immediate impact across formats.

Despite these changes, the backbone of the squad remains intact. Key performers such as ODI captain Shai Hope, fast bowlers Alzarri Joseph and Shamar Joseph, middle-order batter Brandon King, and spin spearhead Gudakesh Motie have all been retained. Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd, and white-ball captain Rovman Powell also continue to hold their places, reflecting the selectors’ faith in the nucleus that has been performing consistently in recent months.

The retention of these names suggests a clear plan to keep stability in the side while gradually introducing new talents. CWI’s decision shows a balance between rewarding current form and investing in long-term development.

Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, emphasized that the contracts were awarded after careful assessment of both current performance and long-term potential. He underlined that the board’s broader vision remains centered on preparing the team for upcoming ICC global tournaments.

“These retainers reflect our strategy of identifying players who not only deliver now but also align with the long-term pathway of West Indies cricket,” Bascombe said.

Alongside the senior retainers, CWI has also announced ‘starter contracts’ for promising youngsters. Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, and Johann Layne have been rewarded with development contracts, marking them as future prospects for the men’s team.
