According to the several media reports going around, ace India batter Virat Kohli is all set to feature in the upcoming 2025-26 edition of the Vijay Hazare Trophy (VHT). India's premier one-day competition is scheduled to get underway on December 24, as Delhi have been placed in the Elite Group 'D' and will be opening their season against Andhra.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently made it compulsory for contracted players to play domestic cricket when not engaged in national duty. While DDCA officials have reportedly confirmed that Kohli will feature for Delhi in a 'few matches', they did not guarantee whether he will take part in the entire tournament.
Kohli retired from T20Is and Test cricket after the 2024 T20 World Cup and ahead of the England tour, respectively. This leaves only ODIs as the active format for the former India captain, who is currently representing the Men in Blue in the ongoing series against South Africa.
Kohli was dismissed for an eight-ball 16-run knock in Delhi's final league phase match of the 2010 instalment of the VHT in a contest against Services at the Tata Energy Research Institute Oval in Gurgaon. He was one of Shadab Nazar's five victims on the day. Delhi, also led by Kohli in that encounter, won the match by 113 runs.
Kohli will represent Delhi in the upcoming season of the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the 33rd edition of the tournament. Unlike a few other players who have had a history of shifting states for better opportunities, Kohli has stuck with Delhi.
Kohli last played for Delhi. As for the last time he represented Delhi in 50-over cricket, it was in the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy in 2013 which had India Blue and India Red as the other two participating teams.
Kohli amassed 124 off just 82 balls in Delhi's 2009 VHT campaign while they were facing Haryana in Dharamsala. Coming to bat after the opening batters had put up a century stand, Kohli continued the momentum with a rather brisk innings which comprised nine fours and seven sixes. Delhi ended up winning the match by a massive 139 runs.
Kohli has played 12 matches across two seasons (2009 and 2010) of the Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi. Although he possesses a stellar record with the bat with an average of 69.36, Kohli was not able to carry the side to a title victory. Delhi have only won the Vijay Hazare Trophy once, which was back in 2013.
Kohli's first Vijay Hazare Trophy match was for Delhi against Jammu & Kashmir in February 2009. He kicked off proceedings with a bang, scoring an impressive ton before getting bowled by Parvez Rasool for 102 off 113. Delhi, who posted 314 in their 50 overs, ended up winning the match by 112 runs.
Speaking of Kohli's List A stats, he has scored 16,934 runs in 341 matches and 328 innings with an astonishing average touching 58 and a strike of almost run-a-ball, which is staggering to say the least. Kohli has tallied 83 fifties and 57 tons up until now.
