Sri Lankan spinner Dunith Wellalage has shared an emotional message following the sudden passing of his father, Suranga Wellalage, while he is with the national side for the all-important Asia Cup 2025. The 22-year-old all-rounder expressed his deep grief while also thanking fans, teammates, and well-wishers for their support during this heartbreaking time.
Wellalage’s father tragically suffered a heart attack on September 18, moments after Sri Lanka’s six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi in the Group B encounter. The young cricketer was informed of the devastating news by team manager Mahinda Halangoda and head coach Sanath Jayasuriya, in an affecting moment that has since taken the cricketing fraternity in utter despair. Wellalage acknowledged the same on Monday via Instagram.
“I want to take a moment to sincerely thank everyone who stood by me and my family during the most painful time of my life, after the passing of my beloved father. Losing him has left a void that can never be filled, but the love, strength, and support I received gave me the courage to keep moving forward,” wrote Wellalage in a post on his official social media handle.
“A special thank you to Sanath Sir, Mahinda Halangoda Sir, and the entire national coaching staff, as well as Charith Aiya and my brothers in the Sri Lanka National Team. Your presence, kindness, and guidance meant more to me than words can ever express. Most importantly, I want to thank the people of Sri Lanka. Your prayers, messages, and unconditional support reminded me that I am never alone. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. My father's dream was for me to continue this journey, and with all of you beside me, I will do everything I can to honor him,” he added.
Dunith Wellalage’s father Suranga dies during Asia Cup 2025
After completing the funeral rites, Wellalage rejoined the national squad and played in Sri Lanka’s Super Four match against Bangladesh, which they lost. Sri Lanka will next face Pakistan in their upcoming Super Four clash. In the Asia Cup so far, Wellalage has played two matches, bowling a total of eight overs, conceding 85 runs and taking 1 wicket.
The Lankan Lions have an incredible opportunity to make it to their third-consecutive finale appearance in the continental competition, and Wellalage will be having a key role in their road to glory and defending their T20 title, which they won in 2022 under Dasun Shanka's leadership.
