Yashasvi Jaiswal and Asitha Fernando in heated exchange after dismissal in Colombo
A tense confrontation between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lanka pacer Asitha Fernando broke out during the morning session of Day 1 of the 2nd Test at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo. The flashpoint arrived in the 17th over of India's first innings, moments after Fernando removed Jaiswal for 45 off 53 balls.
Fernando delivered a good-length ball that moved back sharply off the pitch. Jaiswal looked to play aggressively on the off side, but the ball caught a thick inside edge and deflected onto the stumps. The dismissal ended a positive start from the left-hander, who had accumulated nine boundaries across his 53-ball stay.
After taking the wicket, Fernando directed a fiery send-off at the departing batter. Jaiswal paused mid-walk, reacted to what he heard, and turned back towards the bowler. The two players squared up at close range, with Jaiswal appearing to make slight head contact with Fernando during the confrontation. Sri Lankan fielders moved in quickly to pull the pair apart before the situation could worsen.

India chose to bat after winning the toss at the Sinhalese Sports Club. The morning session proved difficult for the visitors, with both openers back in the pavilion before the interval. Jaiswal's dismissal by Fernando left India at 66 for 2.
KL Rahul had fallen earlier in the session for 18 runs, edging a wide delivery from Lahiru Kumara through to the wicketkeeper. Devdutt Padikkal came to the crease after Rahul's exit and survived a nervy moment early in his innings when a thick edge flew through the slip cordon without finding a fielder. With Jaiswal then removed by Fernando, India faced a challenging position heading into the afternoon session.
India named a changed side for the 2nd Test, with Saransh Jain earning his first Test cap in this match. The visitors were forced to make the change due to the unavailability of Kuldeep Yadav, who was ruled out because of an infection. Captain Shubman Gill confirmed Kuldeep's absence at the toss before play began on August 23, 2026.
