ENG vs NZ 2026: ‘MCC will be the first to admit…’ - Michael Vaughan questions Lord’s pitch after 16-wicket opening day

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has raised concerns over the quality of the Lord’s surface after a dramatic opening day of the first Test between England and New Zealand saw 16 wickets fall.

The day belonged to the fast bowlers as both batting line-ups struggled to cope with the challenging conditions. England were bundled out for just 140 in under 40 overs, with New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson starring with a five-wicket haul.

However, the hosts hit back strongly with the ball. Making his return to Test cricket, Ollie Robinson produced a sensational spell, claiming 4/10 to leave New Zealand reeling at 61/6 at stumps.The visitors’ top order collapsed spectacularly, slipping to 2/3 after Robinson struck three times in his opening over, dismissing Devon Conway, Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra.

While the action-packed day provided plenty of entertainment, Vaughan was far from convinced by the quality of the pitch. The former England skipper pointed to several deliveries that kept low and created uncertainty for batters attempting to defend on the front foot.

“From what I’ve seen on that pitch today, there’s certainly been a number of balls where we’ve seen snickoffs, and we’ve seen a lot of LBWs where the players have been kind of on the front foot playing a forward defence. The balls just thudded into the pads, which tells you that the pitch is a little bit inconsistent in terms of bounce,” Vaughan said on the BBC Test Match Special.

Vaughan further suggested that concerns regarding the Lord’s square have existed for some time and referenced last year’s Test against India as another example of a surface that came under scrutiny despite producing an exciting contest.

“I’ve been royally entertained. 16 wickets on day one. I don’t think it’s a good pitch. I think the MCC will be the first to admit that there’s something not quite right with this square at Lords. It has been an issue for a few years now, since we had the test match against India last year. Brilliant game, and it was a great finish to a Test match, but the pitch wasn’t great. And the Test match being so good in the end, I guess, stopped us all talking about the pitch. This isn’t a great Test match wicket, but we’re royally entertained. I’m sure we’ll have a great Test match,” he added.

The opening day’s play was heavily influenced by conditions that favoured pace bowling. The overcast skies and helpful surface allowed the seamers to dominate proceedings, with neither side turning to spin throughout the day.New Zealand was bowled out just for 113, with Robinson taking five wickets.
