'One of the worst days in history' - Sunil Gavaskar tears into India's shocking T20I series loss to Ireland

India's shocking 0-2 T20I series defeat to Ireland has drawn sharp criticism from batting great Sunil Gavaskar, who blamed the visitors' overconfidence and casual approach for what he described as one of the lowest points in the country's cricketing history.

Led by Shreyas Iyer, India suffered a 34-run defeat in the opening T20I before going down by a solitary run in the second match in Belfast, handing Ireland a historic series triumph. The legendary batter did not mince his words while assessing India's performance.

The former India captain felt the defeat was made even more disappointing because Ireland had not produced extraordinary cricket, but instead capitalised on India's poor approach.

"Sunday, June 28, will go down as one of the worst days in Indian cricket. Losing a game of cricket is one thing, but to lose a series, albeit a two-match series, also depends on whom you lose to. There are many low points in Indian cricket, and I have been a part of some, but to lose to Ireland has to be one of the lowest in the history of Indian cricket. If Ireland had played exceptional cricket, then it would have lessened the blow. It was simply overconfidence and a sense of casualness that let India down, and that’s why the sadness," wrote Gavaskar in his column for Sportstar.

Gavaskar went a step further by drawing comparisons between India's batting display against Ireland and the 1983 Cricket World Cup Final, where the mighty West Indies were stunned by India at Lord's despite entering the contest as overwhelming favourites.

According to Gavaskar, the Indian batters showed a similar sense of complacency, ultimately paying the price for failing to adapt to the conditions.

"It was very much like West Indies in the final of the 1983 World Cup. When you look at West Indies batters’ dismissals, you will see the same overconfidence and casualness that we saw from the Indian batters in both games against Ireland."

The legendary batter also pointed out that India's batters struggled to adjust after spending the T20 World Cup 2026 and the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 playing on batting-friendly surfaces. He felt the visitors continued to play their natural attacking game despite conditions demanding greater patience and situational awareness.

Ireland loss wasn't embarrassing, it was depressing: Shreyas

"Playing according to the situation is such an important aspect of any sport, especially cricket, but almost all the Indian batters tried to live up to their image and, on pitches that had a little extra carry and bounce, found that they were dismissed very easily by some good catching allied to smart bowling."

India's defeat marked Ireland's first-ever bilateral T20I series victory over the Men in Blue and sparked intense scrutiny over the team's approach, with Gavaskar's remarks adding to the growing criticism following the historic setback.
